Before a Storm

Creating your family’s safety plan is imperative. Below are some tips to do before a storm.

Have a central location to gather

This is a place where the family members can gather if a tornado is headed your way. Make sure everyone knows where to go during an approaching storm.

Assemble a Disaster Supplies kit to keep in your shelter

First aid kit
Canned food or other emergency food (don't forget the can opener)
Battery-powered radio, flashlights or glow sticks and extra batteries
A handheld crank generator to charge phones
At least 3 gallons of water
Protective clothing
Sleeping bags or emergency blankets
Special items for infants, elderly or disabled family members
Written instructions on how to turn off electricity, gas, and water if authorities advise you to do so.

Practice, practice, practice.

Conduct periodic tornado drills so everyone remembers what to do when a tornado is approaching. This is especially important for younger children and the elderly to practice.

During Severe Weather

What you have planned for is fast approaching. Below are the common weather warning levels.

When a Tornado Watch Is Issued

Listen to Local radio and tv stations for further updates.
Be alert to changing weather conditions. Blowing debris or the sound of approaching tornado may alert you. If you hear a freight train and you don't live near train tracks, that may indicate a tornado is headed your way....just saying.

When a Tornado Warning Is Issued

If you are inside, it's time to head to the safety of your Allen Tornado Shelter as a tornado may be approaching your area. Wait for the Tornado Warning to be lifted to exit your shelter.

If you are outside, hurry to the basement of a nearby sturdy building or lie flat in a ditch or low-lying area. If you are in car or mobile home, get out immediately and head for safety.
