There are many differences regarding these two types of locations for tornado shelters.  Underground shelters are able to provide the safety and security from storms like an above ground shelter, and are sometimes the best option.    However, an above ground shelter offers the same protection with the advantages that people with limited mobility are able to access them easily. Also, above ground shelters have inswinging doors so that debris cannot prevent exit. An underground shelter has the risk of debris blocking the door. Also, an above ground shelter can be placed in an attached garage so you do not have to go out in severe
weather to access it. 

Here are some advantages of an above ground Allen Tornado Shelter:

- Above ground shelters have a lower risk of flooding during a storm

- There are less pest issues (insects, spiders, snakes) and mold issues with an above ground shelter.

- Above ground shelters can also be used for storage and/or temporary shelter after a devastating storm.

- An above ground shelter will not corrode and/or develop leaks over time like that of an underground shelter.

- Your above ground shelter can be removed and taken to a new residence if so desired.

- An above ground shelter that is located within the residence can be double as a Panic room or a Vault.

tornado.

Shelters are typically built with 4 square feet per person specifications.  So a 4'x6' shelter will comfortably hold 6 people.  We can assist you with determining the size that would be best suited for you needs (i.e, family members, pets, etc.)

Each shelter is bolted to a secure concrete pad, that meets or exceeds design specs, with bolts that have over a 6,000 lbs of pullout force.  Also our shelter doors are secured with three 1” slide bolts that have a shear factor of 20,000 lbs.
